Making New Year's Resolutions are fairly simple. It's sticking to them that's tough. Anyone can draw up a list of "Must -Do's" and "Have to Do's" but honestly, how many of us can walk the talk when it comes to adhering to our resolutions...It takes plenty of will power combined with determination to achieve the 'list' of resolutions - at the end of the day. Now here comes the good news - planning and pragmatism can see you through your resolutions and before you know it you'd have turned over a new leaf, a day at a time -come this New Year!
1. Keep it Simple: Set compact, manageable goals to begin with. If you foresee yourself building an Eiffel Tower with the Lego set you have handy, it goes without saying disappointment won’t be far off. 2. Don't Compete/Compare: This is a common pitfall when it comes to New Year Resolutions. What may work for your friend or neighbor may not work that effectively for you, simply because you are a unique individual who has a totally different socio-psychological framework. Also priorities matter. Your neighbor or acquaintance may be working towards the same goal for a different reason(s) altogether. 3. Start with Yourself: Regardless of the fact whether you are single or in a relationship, start with improving yourself. Look inwards, introspect, ask yourself a couple of candid questions - Am I truly happy with myself? What is it that I can improve? This brings us to another vital issue - Time Management. Unless you set aside a part of the day for yourself, it's next to impossible to build a happy, wholesome lifestyle! Grab some time out for yourself - now. 4. Get Spiritual: Stress is the newest and surest foe we all have to encounter in some avatar or the other in our super-busy lifestyles. There however is an antidote - it's called Meditation. This doesn't necessarily imply shelling out hundreds of dollars for the latest Yoga Class. The beauty of meditation is in the fact that you can practice the same at home, or even in your workplace. Not only does it calm the mind, it even helps in improving your overall health. 5. Open Your Heart: Get involved in your local community; get in touch with a Charity or Not-for-Profit organization that serves children, the elderly or even animals - if you are a nature lover. Visit them once a week and devote your time selflessly, you will marvel at the difference it makes. There are certain things money cannot buy and this is where you will find it! Donate old clothes, furniture, books, appliances etc. to Relief Aid Organizations, instead of dumping them. 6. Disconnect to Reconnect: Turn off your hand held devices more frequently and step outdoors without them for a while every day. Switch off from the virtual world of e-mails and the internet for a part of the day and say hello to your next door neighbor instead. Work is important - but so is keeping that fine balance! 7. Contentment is the Key: While the purpose of setting targets and goals is to keep us on our toes and make us continually improve and upgrade in life, it's equally important to know where to draw the line. For instance, if you dream of achieving the physique / figure of a professional model it will be extremely strenuous and even stressful to attain and adhere to those unrealistic expectations. Maintaining a healthy weight without going overboard is definitely something more pragmatic to aim for, with a higher success rate of realization as well. Lastly, but certainly not the least - cultivate the habit of contentment - your attempts at improving yourself are sincere, realizing and acknowledging that is half the battle won! 8. Keep Notes - and Motivate Yourself: Whatever the resolution set, be it losing weight or learning a hobby, keep track of your progress and don't forget to reward yourself whenever you do achieve a milestone. If you feel tired or demotivated at times, remember to keep little post- it's in sight which have positive one liners such as "You Can Do It!" and " Keep going - you are almost there!" Your resolutions shouldn't intimidate you - they should be positive benchmarks you set yourself for self -improvement, at the end of the day or Year. Resolution Two: If no one else does, I still will. ~ Jonathan Edwards Those who gave thee a body, furnished it with weakness; but He who gave the Soul, armed thee with resolution. Employ it, and thou art wise; be wise and thou art happy. ~ Akhenaton To live like a lion for a day is far better than to live like a jackal for a hundred years. ~ Sultan Fateh Ali Tipu Neither a wise man nor a brave man lies down on the tracks of history to wait for the train of the future to run over him. ~ Dwight D. Eisenhower Let me tell you the secret that has led me to my goal: my strength lies solely in tenacity. ~ Louis Pasteur An invincible determination can accomplish almost anything and in this lies the great distinction between great men and little men. ~ Thomas Fuller A good battle plan that you act on today can be better than a perfect one tomorrow. ~ George S.
